Better Woodturning Through Chemistry

E-mail Print
Ebonizing is a technique that leaves the wood deep black without obscuring the grain figure.  Use species with a high tannin content like oak, walnut, mahogany or even cherry. Soak a wad of fine steel wool or rusty nails in white vinegar overnight.  Brush the solution on the raw wood. This will raise the grain so cut it back with 0000 steel wool or 400+ paper. Repeat several times until the desired depth is achieved.  Let the piece dry thoroughly, then finish with your favorite top coat.
